“It starts with one.”
This is the opening and closing lines of “The Brilliant Deep” by Kate Messner, and students really noticed that the book has a strong message of how one person can make a difference. Kids talked about how one person could help the planet, and how person could find something they care a lot about and help to make it better for others. They thought it would be a great book for Earth Day too!
Kids also talked about what they learned from the book, like how coral reefs grow and what a live rock farm is. They noticed figurative language, and their teachers were glad they noticed!
What their teachers noticed were how this book uses different informational text structures to tell the story of Ken Nedimyer and his work to restore the coral reefs off Florida’s coast. And everyone noticed Matthew Forsythe’s beautiful illustrations!
