Except When They Don’t by Laura Gehl

Except When They Don't: Laura Gehl: Amazon.com: Books

This book should be in every classroom. That was the first thought that went through my head when I read it. From the cover with the girl in the football jersey and helmet and the boy sipping tea, this book takes stereotypes of what boys do and what girls do and points out that stereotypes are exactly what they are. “Girls like pom poms, pink, and jewels, boys like fighting pirate duels…except when they don’t.”

I know many girls who don’t like pink, and I know boys who do. I know girls who wear superhero t-shirts every day and have lightsaber duels, and I know boys who like to play with dolls. (Not action figures, dolls.) This book validates all of the things kids like to do, and sends a very important message: Just be yourself.
