A World of Kindness From the Editors & Illustrators of Pajama Press is a beautiful book with simple text that reminds us all how easy it is to be kind. One feature of this picture book is that it is written as a series of questions.
“Are you kind?
“Do you wait your turn?”
“Will you help someone younger?”
Students liked this because as one third grader said, “It sounds like the book is connecting with you.” Another interesting note is each page features the artwork of a different illustrator. Students enjoyed the variety and spent time analyzing the illustrations.
As a school librarian, I am always looking for ways to help students creatively share what they have learned. As a mentor text, A World of Kindness provides an example of using questions to write about a subject you’ve researched. A student writing about frogs vs. toads could start with the questions:
“Are you a toad?”
“Do you have dry, bumpy skin?
“Do you lay your eggs in a chain?” etc.
Other student feedback included:
“The book is inspiring and a good reminder for all people of how to be kind.” – 3rd grader
“It asks positive questions that help people be happy and follow the Golden Rule.” – 1st grader
