Girls with Guts! The Road to Breaking Barriers and Bashing Records By Debbie Gonzales

This post is written by 5th grade student, Saphira.

I am a 5th grade girl who wants to break barriers. Right now I have relaunched our school’s book swap. This is a place where kids can come and bring a book from home and swap out for a new book. I love books and reading. I want to spread my love for good books to others.

I recently read, Girls with Guts! The Road to Breaking Barriers and Bashing Records. This book is a historical journey through the many female athletes that helped pave the path for equality in sports for woman through the passing of Title IX. In this book you will learn about female marathoner, Melpomene who ran back in 1896 as well as many other athletic legends. It’s hard to believe that it used to just be boys that were allowed to play sports.

The female athletes in this book remind me of my favorite quote ,” The one who falls and gets up is stronger than the one who never tried. Do not fear failure but rather fear not trying (Roy T. Bennett).” If you are looking for a good book that combines history and stories of those who pushed through barriers, than you will want to read this book.
