Our Latinx children and youth need to see themselves in the pages of a book, read stories of other Latinos who have added and continue to add to the fabric of this country. That’s what this book represents: a celebration of 30 Latinas/Latinos who have shaped the history of the USA. This beautiful compilation of biographies was created by Sabrina Vourvoulias with brilliant illustration by Gloria Felix. This anthology includes short biographies of Pura Belpré, Cesar Chavez, Juan Felipe Herrera, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Dolores Huerta, among other amazing Latinos. This book was created by the Smithsonian Latino Center so at the back of the book, readers will find a QR code that takes them to the Smithsonian Learning Lab where they added even more photos, artifacts and work of arts by the Latinos mentioned in the book. There’s a guide for families/guardian to continue the education at home.
Inclusive curriculums in today’s classrooms should be part of every professional development conversations. Our teachings, books, curriculum, stories should include voices and profiles from people around the world. There’s so much beauty in learning from the citizens of the global majority. This anthology is a wonderful addition to any classroom library grades 3 and up.
