My Furry Foster Family Series by Debbi Michiko Florence and illustrated by Melanie Demmer

What I love most about teaching third grade is seeing the tremendous growth in my student’s reading, particularly in their voracious love of chapter books. I’m always on the lookout for new series to introduce to my students. So when I discovered that Debbi Michiko Florence (author of the Jasmine Toguchi books) had written a younger chapter book series, I purchased them immediately.

My Furry Foster Family features eight-year-old Kaita Takana and her family who care for animals until a forever home can be found. Each book features a new animal with challenges that Kaita must confront. Buttons the kitten is shy. Roo the rabbit is not very friendly.  Betty the bearded dragon has an attitude, and the hamsters, Apple and Annie are adventurous and get lost in the house. With each installment, Kaita’s learns the importance of acceptance and patience, believing that there is a forever home for every pet.

The books are colorfully illustrated by Melanie Demmer, and each include questions for readers, activity ideas, a glossary, and a peek at the real-life Kaita who fosters animals with her family.

Second and third grade teachers, you will want this series in your classrooms! A sweet main character, animals, and adventures—there’s much to love, and eight books to go around!
